Field guide

A domestic or released gamebird, not a widespread wild Quebec species.

Identification

Shared features

Round, spotted body, bare head and short tail; sexes look much alike.

Male

Representative helmeted guineafowl: both sexes have a bare head, bony casque and a dark body dotted white. Males may have larger wattles, but the difference is variable.

Female

Representative helmeted guineafowl females share the spotted coat and casque. Wattle size overlaps; appearance alone often cannot reliably establish sex.

Habitat
Near farms or release sites, using open ground with quick access to cover.
Where to look during the day

Morning

At dawn, look around roost trees, farm edges and release areas.

Afternoon

In the afternoon, groups may forage in open ground or shelter in shade.

Evening

At dusk, listen for noisy groups returning toward a roost.

Sounds

Loud, repetitive cackles and rattling alarm calls.

Recorded calls

Helmeted guineafowl, N. m. coronatus (representative)

Field recording of a helmeted guineafowl of the N. m. coronatus subspecies. A narrower call type or the caller's sex is not assigned to this clip.
